When the Dot NET generic top-level extension was first set up in 1985, along with the first domain extensions on the web, it was meant to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure entities. Since there were no special requirements about the usage of the top-level extension, though, .NET domains were secured and used for various purposes and by a huge number of people. This domain extension is a good alternative to dot COM, especially if the necessary domain with the latter domain extension is not free for registration.
